Sean Gibbons Obituary

Sean Patrick Gibbons, age 47, a lifelong Chicago resident and beloved son and brother, passed away on the evening of Wednesday, July 10th, 2024. It is with great sadness that we mourn the death of Sean, yet family and friends find solace in knowing he is at peace and surely entered heaven with a big smile on his face, ready to entertain a whole new audience.

Throughout his life, Sean left a trail of happiness and laughter wherever he went, amusing the world around him with his one-of-a-kind humor and brilliant smile. Sean was never a subtle man, and this was reflected in the overwhelming effect he had on those around him. In both life and death, Sean's memory and influence have prevailed in the lives of those who knew him. Though he left us too early, we remember Sean with a light heart, recalling his smile, kind soul, baseball cap, and of course, his signature black truck.

One of Sean's many passions in life included fixing things, from personal dilemmas to leaky pipes. Sean was as good a friend as he was a plumber; we will all be reminded of this every time we hear a good joke or experience a plumbing disaster, thinking, "Sean should be here."

Sean was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Thomas and Delia Gibbons, and his maternal grandparents, James and Sarah Quinn. He will be truly missed by those he left behind, including his mother, Josephine Patricia Gibbons; his father, Thomas (Debra) Gibbons; his brother, Martin (Laura) Gibbons; his sisters, Maura and Bridget Gibbons; and nieces Sadie and Claire Gibbons. In addition to his immediate family, a plethora of Gibbons and Quinn cousins, uncles, aunts, and friends will experience true heartbreak at the loss of Sean Gibbons.

The entire Gibbons family would like to express our thanks and condolences to all who have shown an immense outpouring of love and kindness following Sean's death. Sean was not someone who took personal relationships lightly, and we can confidently say that he would be simultaneously touched and amused by the support and love that has been shown.

A visitation  commemorating Sean's life will be held at St. Alphonsus Church on Thursday, July 18th, starting at 10:30 AM, followed by a mass at 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice in Sean’s memory.
