Peter "Pete" Joseph Smith

Peter Joseph "Pete" Smith was born in Chicago, Illinois on 19 March 1931 to Peter Smith and Nora Smith nee Carroll. Two well-loved sisters, Mary (John) Barrett and Eileen Smith, also survive his passing.

Pete was the loving and caring husband of Patricia Farrell Smith since 4 October 1952; together they raised six children. Father of: Timothy P. Smith, Stephen J. (Loretta) Smith, Lawrence W. (Nora) Smith, Maureen Smith Bake, Peter F. (Carolyn) Smith, and Julie Smith Penn. Grandfather of: Megan Smith, Justin Smith, Stephanie Smith, Anita (Chelsea) Smith, Molly Smith (Nick Griggs), Patty Smith (Ryan Rodriguez), Peter W. Smith, Cailin Bake (Duncan Lawson), Ricky Bake (Fiancee-Jess Diffendal), Bailey Smith, Carly Smith, Kathleen Smith, Mia Penn and Tessa Penn. Great Grandfather of: Ronan, Harper, Oakley, Crew, Quentin and Bonnie.

We are all grateful for the caregivers who provided support during his last few months with us. This allowed him to die peacefully at home on 16 December 2021.

A champion swimmer for DePaul Academy and DePaul University he worked many summers as a lifeguard at various beaches along the Chicago lakefront.  His collegiate studies were interrupted by service in Korea as a USMC Sergeant with Air Group 33. For over thirty years prior to his retirement he worked at Laminet in Chicago . Over many decades he served in various volunteer capacities for St. Tarcissus Parish and School as well as St. Patrick High School. All who knew Pete were positively affected by his presence in their lives. He will be deeply missed.

The Funeral Mass will be at Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity Church on Monday, 20 December 2021 at 11AM, visitation in the Church prior commencing at 10AM. Interment Calvary Cemetery in Evanston. Please meet at the cemetery after Mass, there will be no procession. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, 1140 West Jackson Boulevard, Chicago, Illinois 60607.
