Mary K. Whitney (nee Tiernan) - beloved wife of the late John; devoted daughter of the late Mary (nee McIntyre) and Patrick Tiernan; loving mother of Mary Ann (Robert) Missak, James (Patricia) and Margie (Scott) Balogh; proud and cherished grandmother of Stephanie (Ryan) Farmer, Michelle (Kyle) Ewert and Steven Missak, Sean (Jillian), Kelly, Bridget Whitney, Lauren (Michael) Marietti, Shannon and Bradley Balogh; great grandmother of Connor, Ellie and Callum; dear sister of Peter (Terri) and the late Tom Tiernan. Mary was born in Kinkeen Ballinamore, Co. Ireland. Kinkeen was in the parish of Drumreilly, where she attended Mass and attended Drumdiffer National School until the age of 14 and obtained her Primary School Certificate. After finishing school, she worked on the family farm, gathering cattle, making hay and household work. In 1952, at the age of 18, she sailed on the Cunard Liner Mauritania from Cobh (pro: Cove) Co. Cork, to New York, where she was met by her Aunt Rose Collins (Tiernan) who travelled from Chicago to meet her. After arriving in Chicago, Mary went to work as a housekeeper for 4 priests. She met and married John Whitney, who hailed from Drumlish Co. Longford. A visitation will be held Thursday, January 25, 2024, 3:00 pm- 8:00 pm at Cooney Funeral Home located at 625 Busse Hwy. in Park Ridge. Funeral Mass January 26, 2024, 10:00 am at St. Paul of the Cross. Interment Maryhill Cemetery.
