Margaret Murphy Obituary

Margaret Murphy (née Higgins), 88, of Recess, Co. Galway, Ireland, passed away
peacefully on August 24, 2024. She was the beloved wife of the late Martin Murphy and
the eldest of six children born to the late Margaret (née Joyce) and Patrick Higgins.
Margaret was the cherished sister of Willie (Sally) Higgins and Eileen (Jim) Sugrue,
and was predeceased by her sisters Bridget (Ted) Alpert, Kathleen (Tim) Walsh, and Ita
Higgins. She also had nine half-brothers and sisters, whom she adored. A loving
mother, Margaret is survived by her children: Michael Murphy, Patricia (Jim) Esbrook,
Marty (Wendy) Murphy, and Eileen (Yvette) Murphy. She was preceded in death by her
son Anthony (Catherine) Murphy. Margaret was a devoted grandmother to 12
grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. At the age of 17, Margaret moved to Chicago,
where she quickly became known for her warm spirit and infectious laugh. She was
always happy to meet new people and made everyone feel welcome. She will be dearly
missed by all who knew her. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at St.
Gertrude Catholic Church, 1420 W Granville Ave, Chicago, IL 60660. Family and friends
are asked to meet at the church. Interment will take place in Recess, County Galway,
Ireland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Misericordia Home or The
National Shrine of St. Frances X. Cabrini.
