Joseph Moore Obituary

Martin Joseph Moore, 93, passed away peacefully in hospice care on May 20, 2020.

Joe was born Nov. 3, 1926 to a large family on a farm in Taghmaconnell, County Roscommon, Ireland.

He left home as a teenager to find work, first in Ireland and then in England.  In 1953, he made a trip across the Atlantic Ocean landing first in Canada.  He eventually took a train to Toronto and then crossed the border into the United States at Buffalo, where he worked for six months on the assembly line for the Ford Motor Company.

He soon arrived in Chicago to serve as best man at his brother Patrick’s wedding.  When the Ford plant went on strike at the same time, he decided to stay in Chicago, which would be his home for the final 65 years of his life.

It was where he met his beloved wife, Ann (nee O’Malley), who was a bridesmaid in a wedding where he was a groomsman.  They married on September 8, 1962 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chicago.

Joe worked hard for a living as a plasterer.  Over a career that spanned more than three decades, he molded and coated the interior walls and ceilings of some of the city’s most iconic buildings.

In retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, including his nine grandchildren.

He was an avid sports fan and had a love for horse racing.  Many weekends in retirement were spent ‘playing the ponies’ with friends at the racetrack or off-track betting parlor.  He also enjoyed rooting for the Chicago White Sox, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football and his beloved hometown “Rossies” Gaelic football Club.

He was the loving husband of Ann, father to Mary (Jon) Wentworth and Kevin (Patti),the proud grandfather of Brian, Monica, Brittany, Thomas, Brenden, Jennifer, Sean, Kaitlyn and Collin; great-grandfather to Tegen and Selena; and brother to Bridie (the late Con) McCarthy and Theresa (Pete) Hanley; a fond uncle to many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son Patrick; siblings Eileen, Julia, Patrick, Kitty, John and Michael; and his parents Molly (nee Gavin) and John Moore.
