Eugene Mangan, born in Cunnigar, Firies, County Kerry, Ireland May 18th, 1930 and resident of Niles, IL passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home with family on September 27, 2020 after living a wonderful and faithful Catholic life. He was the loving husband of the late Mary Ann (Flanagan) Mangan for 60 years; cherished father to James “Jimmy” (Christin) Mangan and the late Maureen (Mark) Prellberg; Grandfather to Brendan and Sean Mangan, Jessica and Morgan Prellberg and many great grandchildren.
He was a devoted son to the late Denis and Julia Mangan, Cunnigar, Firies, County Kerry, cherished brother to Margaret (Peg) Mangan and his late sisters and brothers Mary (Gunther) Rudy, Johanna Mangan, John Mangan and Jimmy Mangan all from County Kerry. A loved uncle to our family in Canada, Arnold, Pauline, Tessa Rose and Laura Linda.
Eugene was a true Irish gentleman, always smiling, always gracious, always humble, always loving, always strong and the hardest working man we know. His smile was infectious, and he would light up the room when he saw his grandchildren, family and friends. He traveled from Ireland to Canada at 19 years of age for work and after a few years in Canada, he returned to Ireland. From there, he set on his next adventure, Chicago. It is there, where he met the love of his life for the next 60 years, became an Iron Worker and started a family. He suffered severe injuries in his life, and never once did he complain or think he was unable to get the job done. Despite all of this, he remained an Iron Worker until he retired.
He was an Extraordinary Minister of Communion, member of the Holy Name Society, loved playing the card game “25” with family and friends, and above all else he was a faithful husband and loving father. Beyond his deep love for his family, Eugene was a devoted Catholic and servant of our Lord, helped many in his life and in retirement, setting an example for his family every day and at the hour of his death.
Eugene passed away peacefully praying the rosary with Fr. Patrick Peyton and in the arms of his son. He longed desperately for his wife Mary who preceded in him passing in April. He attended Mass and prayed every day asking God for both his and her peace so they could be together again. God answered his prayer and we know that he is in Heaven holding mom’s hand again.
