Arthur (Art) Spietz Obituary

Arthur (Art) Lawrence Spietz, age 89 of Chicago - sailor of boats, swimmer of lakes, teller of jokes, confidant, listener, hero of wars and fixer of everything - Passed Wed., Dec. 16, 2020. Beloved husband of Marilyn (Vogel), father to Trina Kakacek (John), Erin Molek (Timothy), proud grandfather to Elyse, McMillen, Dirk, Greta, brother to Gilbert (Donna) (both predeceased) brother-in-law to Betty, devoted uncle to Trip (predeceased) Jeff, Carrie.

Born on October 21, 1931 on the north side of Chicago to Gilbert and Emma Spietz, Art developed a fondness for the waters of lake Michigan as well as those up north in Wisconsin, and dreamed of a summer place of his own.  He attended Lakeview High school, served his country in the Korean war, and returned to complete his education at the University of Illinois. The son of a sign painter – he was himself a skilled painter and artist. Eventually Art’s affinity for the water led him to spend time at the Waveland Rocks, where he met his wife of 63 years, Marilyn Vogel. Soon the children were born and the first dream – a summer cottage on a Wisconsin lake, was built. Toy number two came soon after, a racing sailboat to sail on Lake Michigan. When not enjoying his family and his toys, Art was an active member of his community: basketball and softball coach; Board member (and volleyball league player) at the Irving Park YMCA;  and Rock Lake Highlands Association in Trevor, Wisconsin; Member of Ridgemoor Country Club, Portage Park Garden Club, and a SAINTS volunteer usher in Chicago theaters. Art was the owner of Marc Chemical Products Corporation and ran the business until 2020.
