Amarjit Singh Galhotra, 85, died peacefully at home on January 19, 2023. He was born February 27, 1937, in Sialkot, India, the first son of Gurbakhsh Singh and Iqbal Kaur. A graduate of Polytecnic Nilokheri, where he completed his electrical engineering studies, he worked for the Indian Railways as an electrical engineer, teaching proper maintenance and operation of electric locomotives to future electricians. In India, he married Gurnam Galhotra (nee Bhatia; d. 2016), and fathered two sons, Simranjit and Kulmeet. In 1972, he emigrated to the United States and brought his wife and children to America to join him the following year. Preferring not to be behind a desk, he opted for a job as an electrician at a ball-bearing manufacturing plant on Chicago's north side. In 1976, the family settled in the North Center neighborhood of Chicago. Later, he earned a supervisory electrician license from the City of Chicago. He was a union man and UE member. “A.J.” as he was affectionately called later in life, survived three open heart surgeries, endured Parkinson’s disease and succumbed to pulmonary fibrosis. Amarjit is survived by his sons, Dr. Simranjit Singh Galhotra and his wife Katherine Larson, and Kulmeet S. (Bob) Galhotra, Esq. and his partner Deb Doetzer. He leaves behind his grandchildren Rosemary (Lucas) Cox-Galhotra, Grace Kaur Lemke Galhotra (Ben Green), Lauren Galhotra, Evan Singh Lemke Galhotra, Simran James Galhotra, and Melissa Galhotra; Great Grandfather of Arlo and Atlas Cox-Galhotra. He is survived by his sister Davinder Jolly and brother Harjit S. Galhotra, both of Houston, Texas. Uncle to many nephews and nieces.
