Thomas Fortener, age 83, passed away on July 10, 2026.
Tom was born on May 31, 1943, in Delphos, Ohio, to Marcella “Sally” and Melvin “Bud” Fortener. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of nearly 51 years, Eileen Fortener (née Gase), who passed away in 2017; and his older brother, James Fortener, who passed away earlier this year.
He is survived by his loving children, Andrew (Alisha) Fortener and Michelle (Josh) Ready; his cherished grandchildren, Holly, Zackery, Ethan, Sean, Joseph, and Ryan; and his devoted nephews, Michael (Mandy) Fortener and Steven (Jennifer) Fortener.
A graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Tom later earned his Master of Business Administration from Northern Illinois University. He began his career with General Electric before serving his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, he continued his career with GE, where he devoted 35 years of service and earned the respect of colleagues through his integrity, leadership, and dedication.
Tom’s faith was a guiding force throughout his life. He dedicated time to teaching religious education to both youth and adults and, following retirement, moved with Eileen to the mountains of North Carolina, where they became active members of their church community at Sacred Heart in Brevard. Tom was a Third Degree Knight of Columbus and devoted countless hours to serving others. Together, Tom and Eileen enjoyed volunteering with their church, traveling the world, visiting family across the country, watching baseball, and cheering on their beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish every football season.
More importantly than any accomplishment, Tom had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel seen, welcomed, and valued.
Above all else, Tom was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was the man who always showed up…steady, dependable, and selfless. He led by example, valued education and service, and took great pride in making sure his children and family had the support, opportunities, and foundation they needed to succeed. His quiet strength made those around him feel safe, supported, and loved.
Tom’s life was defined not only by his accomplishments, but by the lives he touched. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, generosity, humility, and unconditional love. His family will forever remember him as their protector, their teacher, and their hero.
Memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, July 16, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Cooney Funeral Home in Park Ridge, Illinois.
