Obituary

Paul J. Hagemann, Retired Sgt CPD, age 57, on Monday, May 27, 2024. Devoted husband of Molly (nee Riordan) for 20 years. Proud father of John and Jenny. Preceded in death by his beloved parents, Frank (WWII Veteran, Retired CPD) and Emily (Michalak) Hagemann. Treasured youngest brother of Matt, Susan, the late Janice, Gail, and Carol. Loving son-in-law of Sharon and the late Brian Riordan. Dear brother-in-law of Becky (Bill, CFD) Gierhahn, Tom (Cecile) Riordan, and Emmett (Meg) Riordan. Fond uncle to 12 nieces and nephews. Paul was born and raised in Chicago's Portage Park neighborhood, across the alley from St. Bartholomew where he attended grade school. He graduated from Gordon Tech High School and the University of Illinois-Chicago with a degree in accounting. Paul joined the Chicago Police Department in 1995 and rose to the rank of Sergeant; however, his most-loved assignment remained Detective, a rank he achieved very early in his career and where he excelled for 14 years, including several with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force. Upon retiring in 2017, Paul worked for Discover Financial Services, and then returned to law enforcement, serving as an Investigator in the Cook County State's Attorney's Office for five years. He was a consummate professional who led by example. A man of character whose loyalty was surpassed only by his intellect. Paul was highly respected and admired by those fortunate enough to have worked with him or to have called him friend. His presence will be deeply missed by his lifelong friends and his family, especially his two children to whom he provided a solid foundation and love to last their lifetimes.
