Michael J. Sullivan
Composer, Organist, Teacher
Michael J. Sullivan passed away on Saturday, Sept. 14. He was 77. Michael's study of music began at age 7, and his first attempts at composition soon followed. He advanced his knowledge of music through study at DePaul University, the American Conservatory of Music, and the doctoral program in musicology at the University of Chicago. His published and recorded works consist mainly of choral compositions and organ works. Many of these pieces have been performed and recorded in the United States and foreign countries. Michael was a church music director and organist. Over his career, he held this positions at a number of prominent Chicago churches, including Queen of Angels, St. Vincent Ferrer, St. Mary of the Lake, St. Vincent DePaul, St. Benedict, and St. Bartholomew.
He had a long career as a high school music teacher in the Chicago Public Schools.
Beginning in 1970, he taught at Kenwood Academy, Harlan, Richards Vocational, and Near North. He retired from teaching and performing in 1997.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank J. and Dorothy (nee Waldren) Sullivan, his brothers, Joseph (Kay), Cornelius (Lorraine), Donald, and Edward (Grace) Sullivan. He is survived by his brother, Roger (Rosemary) Sullivan, and twenty-two nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends.
Visitation at Cooney Funeral Home, 3918 W. Irving Park Road, Chicago. Thursday, Sept. 19, from 3 to 9 p.m. Family and friends to meet at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, for the Mass of the Resurrection. Interment All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines.
