Obituary

Mary Caroline Wurglitz, a proud native Chicagoan and 59-year Lakeview resident, died peacefully on December 8, 2014, at Glenbrook Hospital of congestive heart failure.  She was 94.  Born one of four children to Austrian immigrants John and Anna Dvornik on September 5, 1920, she attended Josephinum High School for two years but left to work to help support her family.  She made electronics components on an assembly line at Belmont Radio, while her free time was spent swimming, horseback riding in Grant Park, playing on a YWCA basketball team and dancing at the Aragon Ballroom to big band music. In 1940 she married her childhood sweetheart, Alfred Kaplan Wurglitz, and enjoyed a honeymoon in the Wisconsin Dells.  Returning to Chicago, the young couple settled into domestic life, with Al establishing himself as a plaster craftsman.  During WWII, Mary and Al were stationed in Marysville, California, where Al worked as an Army dental technician and medic.  The first of four children, Mary Ann ("Mitzi"), was born in 1944.  Alfred Michael, William Alan and Ann Theresa followed. After her children were grown, Mary returned to the workforce as a secretary for the Retail Baker's Association, a group her uncle helped organize in 1918.  The Association's far-flung annual conventions gave her a chance to travel the U.S.  Mary loved travel, visiting Austria with her dear sister, Agnes, family gatherings and fishing with Al and the kids, especially at Lake Chetek in Wisconsin.  But her fondest loves were her six grandchildren and two recent great grandchildren.  She was delightfully "old fashioned," ultra-frugal, and kind. She was a faithful Democrat and Catholic. Grams loved the Sunday Chicago Tribune – "Sunday was not Sunday without it" – and the first section she read was the comics, a family trait.  She also loved gardening and overwintered numerous plants that would come to life in spring. Her husband Al died in 1981.  Surviving are children Alfred M. Wurglitz (Julia) of Gaithersburg, Maryland, William A. Wurglitz (Judy) of Essex, Illinois, and Ann T. Jaslikowski (Kaz) of Glenview, Illinois.  Daughter Mary Ann died in 1998.  Grandchildren are: Michael Alan Wurglitz (Beka) of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Tenley Elizabeth Larson Wurglitz of Washington, D.C.; Adam Alfred Jaslikowski of Folsom, California, Carolyn Beth Carter (Steven) of Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Thomas Michael Jaslikowski of Chicago, Illinois, and Kathryn Michele Jaslikowski, a student at TCU in Ft. Worth, Texas.  Great grandchildren are: Nathan Alan Wurglitz and Natalie Catherine Carter.  Loving Aunt to many nieces and nephews. Special Aunt and close friend of the late Agnes Pamper.  Long-time neighbor of dear friends Lucie and Brian Daley and the Barbara and Joe McDonagh family. Another of the "Greatest Generation" gone. Visitation will be Thursday, December 18, from 3-8 pm at Cooney Funeral Home, 3918 W.  Irving Park Rd. in Chicago and a funeral Mass will be held Friday, December 19 at 10 am at St. Andrew Catholic Chapel, 1711 W. Addison  St., Chicago. Interment will immediately follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, 3100 Thatcher Avenue, River Grove, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mary's favorite charity: Misericordia Home, Heart of Mercy, 6300 N.Ridge, Chicago, IL 60660. Info 773-588-5850 www.cooneyfuneralhome.com
