Chicago - Martin Anthony O'Malley, age 86, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, August 21, 2017. Martin was born on February 19th, 1931 in Rogers Park to Patrick and Mary O'Malley of Co. Mayo and was a member of St. Gertrude's Parish. After graduating from Sullivan High School, Martin served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1953. On September 24, 1955 he married his lifelong love Mary Whelan (Co. Kildare). In 1957, Martin joined the Chicago Police Department and proudly worked until his retirement in 1989. Even in retirement, Martin was passionate about serving others and volunteered countless hours for Special Olympics, the USO, and the Leaning Tower YMCA Conquerors. He even served as the Commander Division 1 Special Olympics Chicago Chairman from 1997 to 2009. Martin also enjoyed being an active member of Amvets Police Post #18 and Kiwanas International.
Martin is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary and was devoted to their five children, Patrick (Leatha); Ann Mary (David Wheeler); Martin Jr.; Tim; Eileen (Tim Ness). He was a proud grandfather who enjoyed spending time and sharing laughs with his nine grandchildren, Maureen, Megan, Sean, Katie, Emmet, Ellen, Ciara, Fiona and Danny. He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Mary O'Malley. Martin was the fond brother of John O'Malley and the late Kevin O'Malley.
The wake will be held on Friday, August 25th from 3 - 9 pm at Cooney's Funeral Home, 625 Busse Hwy, Park Ridge, IL 60668. Mass will be held on Saturday, August 26th at 9:30AM at St. Mary of the Woods, 7003 N Moselle Ave, Chicago, IL 60646 with the burial proceeding the mass.
