Marilyn Paula Schatz (Born 2/27/1931 – 2/12/25). Long time Northside Chicago resident. Married to the late Louis Donald Schatz, Chicago Policeman. Daughter of the late Alphonse and Gertrude Burm. Sister to the late Sanda (Dan) Cornish and the late Charles Burm. Mother of eight children – Patricia (Sam) Diamond, Donald, Stephen (Peggy), Louie, Michael (Lisa), Cynthia (Michael) Cooney, David, and the late Carol Ann. Loving grandma to the late Bill Mohlman, Matthew (Liz) Mohlman, Sara, Danielle, Adam (Amanda) Diamond, Geoffrey, Bryan (Terilyn), Katie (Chris) Tom, Alex (Abbey), Shane, Jessica, Michael (Laura) Cooney, Conor (Molly) Cooney, Claire (Joseph) Carroll. Proud great grandma to Charlie, Luke, Cecelia, Rosie, William, Colin, Leslie, and Donovan, with another two precious angels arriving soon. She was an aunt to many nieces and nephews, near and far, but especially her niece Barbara Cornish-Hillis, who was by her side holding her hand at the end.
Our mom lived an incredible 94 years—a life filled with highs, lows, and countless accomplishments. She was a one-of-a-kind personality, capable of making you laugh one moment and cry the next. She had a gift for conversation, whether chatting with a stranger at a makeup counter or offering support at a group meeting.
She worked tirelessly, holding more jobs than we can count—from the telephone company, to WTTW, and the Fraternal Order of Police. She loved talking on the phone, running errands around Chicago, and traveling to Nantucket, Europe, and Alaska, as well as visiting family in Texas, Cincinnati, and McHenry. She found joy in riding her bike, attending water aerobics classes, shopping and having lunch at Neiman Marcus with her mom. She cherished watching her boys play baseball and never missed a game when it came to her grandsons' football and soccer matches. She loved old movies, reading, and reminiscing about the past.
Like all of us, her life had its share of loss, struggles, and challenges, but those experiences shaped Marilyn into the remarkable person she was. She could be difficult, picky, and unfiltered, but through it all, she taught us invaluable lessons—about resilience, hard work, seeking support when needed, and pushing through even the toughest times. She reminded us that while life isn't always about smiling, sometimes you just have to laugh when you feel like crying.
In her final days, she found strength once more, spending four precious days at home, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—enveloped in love. She knew her work on this earth was complete, and with grace and peace, she surrendered to her eternal rest, becoming our forever angel in Heaven.
Marilyn's legacy will live on in all who knew her. Her unwavering strength, deep love for family, and unique outlook on life will never be forgotten.
