Josie Fina: September 12, 1921 to May 16, 2025
Josie Fina died in Elkhorn Wisconsin on May 16, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents Nicasio and Georgia (Pesco). Her siblings were Joe, Sam, Lena and Carmello. Her nieces and nephews were Jerry, Joel, Jorjean, Georgiann and Carmen. She has fourteen grand nieces and nephews and thirteen great grand nieces and nephews. Of special significance is the great grand niece named after her—another Josie! Josie grew up near the Drake hotel and walked to Holy Name Cathedral to pray. The most important part of her day was to start each day with at least an hour of prayer. She had an unwavering faith in the Lord, praying always for others. She was a night auditor for the Marriott Hotel until her health necessitated she quit. But her free time was taken up by caring for her aging parents. Although she never married, that is not to say she didn't find pilots, doctors, judges and lawyers very interesting! She was a friend to all she met. Going out with her friends for lunch was one of the best days in the month. She was willing to cancel doctor appointments in order not to miss those outings. She took such pleasure in helping others. She volunteered at a shelter for women as well as at several food pantries. At Golden Years the residents loved her and sought her out. She read the horoscope of residents and employees as they passed where she was reading the paper! She was a fanatic when it came to Bingo. She played until she won! Josie commented once that when she got well she would come back and volunteer to help the old folks at Golden Years! She was elegant and classy at 90+ and not afraid to slip on her heels for an evening. At 99 she went on her first camping trip, ate smores, and went on a speed boat ride. Although at 100 learning the iPad was a challenge, she stuck to it enough to visit with family and friends. At 100 she still had someone hold the ladder so she could clean her gutters. At 102 she was still interested in beautifying her lawn and caring for her hostas. She loved the outdoors, the trees, the flowers, the birds. Josie was never too old to do something—including gambling! Her story started in the roaring 20's and she never looked back!
Donations in her name can be made to the Cloistered nuns at the Carmelite Monastery. Aunt Josie always brought the Sisters goodies and asked them to pray for her family. Their address is Carmelite Monastery 949 N. River Rd Des Plaines, Illinois 60016. Or pick up an envelope at the Visitation.
