Obituary

Joseph H. Arndt Jr., of Arlington Heights passed away in May surrounded by family and friends. Following the sudden diagnosis of Cardiac Amyloidosis, Joe did his best to continue to care for his beloved Rosie Sebastian, but the progression of the disease made recovery impossible.  Joe's strong work ethic started at an early age. At the request of his father, he rode his bike to Park Ridge Country Club where he lied about his age to become a caddy at the age of 10. As our dad would recount, he couldn't lie at first, but his dad pressed him to go back and tell the caddy master he was 12. Therein, Dad's love affair with all things related to golf was born! It is fitting then, that Dad received an Evans Scholarship to Marquette University following his high school career at Fenwick High School in Oak Park, and grade school at St. Paul of the Cross in Park Ridge. At Marquette he graduated with a Bachelors of Civil Engineering and later became a Registered Professional Engineer, work that he loved dearly.  In 1962, Joe married the love of his life, Rosie Sebastian, at St. Paul of the Cross Church in Park Ridge, Illinois. Always a man who gave 110% to everything he did, Joe worked hard to provide for Rose and their six children.  Joe spent many long nights at Kenny Construction in Wheeling, followed by Dunnett Bay Construction, where Joe retired. A meticulous estimator who loved to show his children the road and bridge jobs that he completed back in the day!  Joe enjoyed his many road trips up to Milwaukee for Marquette basketball games. He attended his last game on February 4th with his son-in-laws.  Years earlier, he would take his beautiful Rosie to Marquette basketball games, followed by dinner at Fox and Hounds, where Joe proposed to Rosie. Joe's memories of Marquette, participating in the Road Builders Association, his annual planning for the S.H.I.T (Scholar House Invitational Tournament) tournaments, and the friendships he made there were a source of comfort and joy in his remaining months of life.  Through their marriage of 54 years, Joe and Rosie taught their children and grandchildren so many wonderful life lessons. The dynamic duo had many wonderful adventures together. From cross country skiing in Montana, canoeing in the Boundary Waters, to fishing at his sister Mary Ann's cabin in Minnesota, Joe and Rose loved spending time outside together. Joe continued to offer his unconditional love to his beloved wife, who suffers from Alzheimer's, while also caring for his wood duck boxes. He was a man committed to Rosie, his children, his grandchildren, and lifelong childhood/college friends.  Joe loved golf and was walking 18 holes last fall, never taking a cart, since, "The shepards never took a cart." His last round in October, Joe shot 85 at 78 years of age, destined to shoot his age one day soon.  Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Rosie Sebastian, his sister Mary Ann O'Leary, his children Katie Arndt Simons, Jaime Arndt (Mike Erickson), Jodi Arndt, Matthew Arndt (Suzy Reutter), Meghan Arndt (Tommy Nuzzo), Holly Arndt (Dan Bragaw). After retirement, Joe could often be found calendaring his grandchildren's events so he could attend. With Rosie's Alzheimer's Joe became the mother, father, caretaker, and family organizer. He always looked forward to attending his grandchildren's events and hearing about all the many ways they made him proud by living by his example. His grandchildren are Elizabeth Simons, Olivia Simons, Emily Erickson, Luke Simons, Michael Erickson, Chloe Simons, Matthew Erickson, Tessa Creighton, Jonas Arndt, Penn Bragaw, and two more grandchildren on the way this year.
