John Patrick Egan, retired C.P.D., passed away September 12. John was the beloved son of the late William (Retired C.P.D. Captain) and the late Margaret (nee Walsh). He is survived by his loving sisters Noreen (Bill) Olker and (C.P.D.) Mary Kate (Dave) Nanninga. John was the adoring uncle of (C.P.D.) William (Kathleen) Nanninga, Margie (Joey) Ignoffo, Loretta (Andy) George, Kay (James) Pericht, John Nanninga, Matt (Callie) Olker, Ellen Olker and Anne Nanninga. John was the devoted great-uncle of Rosemary, Cora, Nile, Clark, Luke, and David. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two infant brothers, Dennis and Raymond.John enjoyed a 27-year career as a Chicago police officer, spending many years patrolling the 24th District. John was also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, an accomplishment in which he took great pride. John was a graduate of St. Thecla grammar school and St. Patrick High School.John was affectionately known as "my son John" by his mother Margie. His father Bill was tremendously proud of John, writing him 5-6 letters per week while he was in the Marine Corps, letters John still had in his possession. John was a loving and devoted brother, choosing always to live near his sisters who doted on him.  He would frequently visit (often unannounced), engage in fun banter, and then abruptly use his famous "Irish Exit" .John had a very unique personality to go along with his distinctive voice. He had a great sense of humor and was the type of person that drew others to him. John often entered a room full of nieces and nephews loudly exclaiming "What's up dorks?" His humor was customarily sarcastic and deadpan in nature. He was loved by many co-workers and childhood friends who remained loyal to him throughout his life. John had an affectionate side. He really loved his dog Roger, a stray he took in when he found him wandering the streets of Rogers Park. John also enjoyed sitting in the front window of his house, watching the birds feed on his feeder, and taking in the daily happenings of the block. John loved golfing, spending time at the beach (especially at the ocean), and going for walks and bike rides in the forest preserve. He could be found during summer days floating leisurely in the pool while taking in an afternoon Cubs game on the radio. John was a news aficionado, always trying to learn all sides of an issue troubling the world each day. He enjoyed following the Cubs, Bears, and Fighting Irish. John was a PGA golf fan to the highest degree, never missing a "Major" event on television .John will be remembered very fondly by family and friends. He was often endearingly described as a "character" by those who knew him best. John Patrick Egan was truly one of a kind and will be greatly missed .A celebration of John's life will be held at Cooney Funeral Home, 625 Busse Highway, Park Ridge, IL. on Sunday, September 22, 2024. Visiting hours will begin at 3 p.m. leading to a prayer service at 5:30 p.m., which will be held at the funeral home.
