Joan Bailey, 79, longtime resident of Chicago, born May 1, 1939, surrounded by her loving family, at eternal rest March 23, 2019. Loving mother of James (Monica); cherished grandmother of T.J. (Elba), Maggie, Shannon, Megan (Trovelle), Michelle, Ethan, Joshua and Shannon; adored great-grandmother of 8; loving Sister of Mary and Barbara; cherished aunt and great-aunt; cousin and dear friend to Debbie. She is preceded in death by her parents Alfred Smith and Clara (Cinalli), step-father Luke Alexander, husband James , sister Janet, children Timothy and Donna. A wake will be held Thursday, March 28th at Cooney Funeral Home located at 3918 W. Irving Park Road in Chicago from 3:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. A short service will take place at the conclusion of visitation. Interment private. Joan was born in Philadelphia to Clara Rose Cinalli and Alfred Charles Smith. She was the second oldest of 4 girls, Mary, Janet and Barbara. After the unfortunate death of her father, her mother remarried to Luke Alexander and the young family moved to Chicago in the 1940's. Joan attended Lemoyne Elementary and Lakeview High School. She met her future husband James while working at a movie theatre. They had three children, James, Timothy and Donna. Joan loved to read romance novels, attend bingo, drink pepsi, and of course her beloved Chicago Cubs! She was a member of the ladies Auxiliary Post 54 of Hobart, Indiana for 17 years. Joan adored her family, especially her 8 grandchildren. Joan worked very hard her whole life. She worked at Bell and Howell making hand grenades in the 1960's and 70's. In the mid 80's she began her longtime career working in concessions at Wrigley Field. A position she dutily fulfilled year after year. She was looking forward to retiring at the end of this Cubs season at the young age of 80.
