James Browne McGuire, in his 79th year, passed away peacefully surrounded by his best friend and bride of 57 years, Mickey (nee Egan), and their 6 children. Larger than life and always ready with a quick comment, Jim started life on the West Side of Chicago in Help of Christians school where he met Mickey in first grade. Jim later moved to Oak Park with his parents, the late James and Margaret McGuire, his grandmother, Elizabeth Browne, and his siblings, Justine (Roger) Burke, Mary Anne (Phil) O'Grady, Roger CPD (Marianne), Kevin (Nadine), and the late Alan CPD (Maureen). A'52 St. Ignatius grad, Jim moved onto John Carroll University. Sales was his life-long calling. At Chicago 7-Up he worked his way up to Regional Sales Manager, then was recruited by Vienna Beef as Vice President of Sales, moved to Alpha Baking Company before ending his work journey with his own company, Snacks Unlimited, selling Famous Amos cookies. Jim was an active member and former president of the Food, Beverage and Equipment Executives. Jim and Mickey began their own family moving to the Northwest Side while still in their twenties. The pandemonium began with Maureen (Ira) Helfgot, Colleen (Tom Clark) McGuire, Judge Dennis , Jim (Liz), Michael (Juvy Granada) and Emmett (Michele). Jim was a perfectionist and tough taskmaster, with high expectations for himself and all who crossed his path. Jim might even say that his proudest accomplishment was that his children completed a combined total of 104 years of Catholic education–you do the math. While his life was about hard work and discipline, Jim also arranged remarkable family and golf vacations, built his Galena retreat for family and friends, was a sports fan extraordinaire, and maintained lifelong friendships with many of his and Mick's 'club' buddies. Jim, aka 'Magoo,''Bo' and 'Poppy,' was loved too by his in-laws Kay 'Neen' Egan Rauch, and the late Marie, Eileen and Captain Bill Egan CPD, his grandchildren Michael and Neil Helfgot, Ian, Colin, Claire and Maggie McGuire, and many nieces and nephews. Jim was the recipient of much loving and compassionate care from all those at Forest Villa. Jim's devotion to his Catholic faith, his love of military history, 40's music, golf and all things sports, his children, grandchildren and all their accomplishments was only surpassed by his incredible love for Mickey. Ever the salesman, no doubt Jim is regaling the saints and angels right now with an outreached hand and a "Hi, Jim McGuire, nice to meet you." We will all miss Bo, but are praying that he is building a new 2-flat in heaven for our next party when we are all together again. Visitation at Cooney Funeral Home, 625 Busse Hwy., Park Ridge Friday from 3 to 9 p.m. Funeral Saturday 9:15 a.m. to St. Eugene Church. Mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
