Harry (Xaralambos) Stavrides (91) of Niles, IL died after a brief illness on Monday 18 January 2016. Born September 11, 1924 in Istanbul, Turkey, he moved to Greece as a child, following the death of his father. Harry attended Athens College, where two of his brothers taught, and The Polytechnic Institute in Athens. Conscripted during the Greek Civil War, he served two tours of duty in northern Greece. Following the war he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering concentration) at the University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana. Harry worked for decades as the Chief Structural Plan Examiner in the Building Department in Chicago. He became an expert in high rise building structures and in reinforced concrete. He sat on multiple building code committees and was recognized as a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute for sitting on the reinforced Concrete Building Code committee for nearly 30 years. He also taught reinforced concrete design as an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Harry was the beloved husband of the late Alice for 62 years. He is survived by daughters Dr. Eleni Vassilika and Diane Sward, and son Philip and their two offspring each: Theodora & Alexia; Niko & Alix; Katie & Stephen; and by his nephew Professor Stavros Stavrides (Athens), and his many friends.
