Obituary

Emily (Chris) Jennie Baum, (nee Ryglewicz), of Park Ridge, died January18th at the age of 86. She was born November 26, 1929 in Plainfield, N.J.; daughter of Andrew and Sophie Ryglewicz.; she is survived by her husband of 62 years, Harold Baum (married May 2, 1953) and her children Jay (Georgia) Baum and Vikki (Robert) Hanson and grandchildren Jason and Andrew Baum and Robert Jr. and Jennifer Hanson and one great grandson, James Andrew Baum. Other survivors are her in-laws: Robert Baum; William and Landa Baum; Grace Baum widow of Norman Baum Jr. and nieces and nephews: Patricia, Kenneth, Herbert, Raymond, Edward and Joyce, children of the late Norman Baum Jr; Paul, Joanne and Donald, children of Robert; and David, Susan and Lisa, children of William and Landa Baum; and many grandnephews and grandnieces.  A journalism graduate with honors from the University of Illinois, Urbana and member of Kappa Tau Alpha; her career included jobs at weekly newspaper chains, including managing editor of the Lerner Newspapers Times Division and at Reed Elsiver Trade magazines. She was active in Communications and the Illinois Women's Press Association.  For many years she was active at St. Anselm's Episcopal Church in Park Ridge, serving on the church governing board and as a Sunday school teacher. Her activities in retirement included being a volunteer working with grade school children in ESL programs and with adults in Oakton Community College's ESL Program. She also served as a facilitator for Oakton College's New Yorker Magazine Discussion class. Chris was an avid reader and life-long learner. She and her husband Harold attended "Senior University" for over twenty years at Indiana University and in recent years at The U. of Wisconsin. She was active up until her death in book clubs and viewed many movies over her life-time. She was a world traveler as she and Harold had visited every continent except Antarctica. Visitation at Cooney Funeral Home, 625 Busse Hwy, Park Ridge on Thursday from 3 to 9 p.m.. Funeral Friday, Lying in State from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 am. at Messiah Lutheran Church.  Service at 10:00 a.m.  Interment private.  For info (847) 685-1002 – www.cooneyfuneralhome.com.
