Obituary

Donald J. Haderlein, 90, of Park Ridge, IL, formerly the Edgebrook neighborhood in Chicago. Born March 2, 1926 and entered into eternal life February 3, 2017.   Husband of the late Dolores (nee Cornacchia), loving father of Gerard (Therese), Mary (Ned Reece), John, Donald (Bernadette), Barbara (Drew) McCartney and Hope (Ken) Bradley.  Loving and proud grandfather of Tom Perto, Angela (John) Pontikis, Jerry, Maggie and Joseph Haderlein, Seth (Mallory), John "Jack" , Franklin "Fritz"  and Genevieve "Gigi"  Reece, Eric and Nicole Haderlein, Peter and Jonathan Haderlein, Lauren, Liam and Evan McCartney, Nathaniel and Tessa Bradley. Great-grandfather of Victor and Mila Reece. Son of the late John and Marie Haderlein and brother of the late Lorraine (the late George) Murphy, Jackie (the late Lou Corna and Reginald Stebbins), and Thomas (Ann) Haderlein.  Dear uncle, friend and business associate and real estate mentor to many. Don was born in Lakeview, attended St. Andrews School and DePaul Academy before enlisting in the Navy during WWII.  Upon completion of his military service, he went on to college at IIT and earned a Bachelors degree in engineering.  He worked for the Chicago Transportation Authority for a few years before joining Haderlein and Co. Real Estate, the family real estate business that was started by his native German grandfather in 1919. He eventually ran 2 full service agencies, on Paulina Street in the Lakeview neighborhood and on the Milwaukee Avenue in the Gladstone/Norwood Park neighborhood. He was involved in the development and redevelopment of many projects in the Lakeview area throughout his career and held leadership roles in many organizations and causes including the Chicago Board of Real Estate, Lakeview Chamber of Commerce, Property Listers Association Northwest, Chicago Association of Realtor Arbitration Committee, Wildwood Community Association, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Family Movement, Gabriel Richard and Renew.  In 2001, the City of Chicago honored him and the family's 80+ year involvement in Lakeview real estate by re-naming the 3400 block of N. Paulina Street "Don Haderlein Way." Don raised his family in Edgebrook and was an early member of St. Mary of the Woods for 28 years before moving to Park Ridge in 1988 and joining St. Paul of the Cross.  He was a member of Ridgemoor Country Club for 45 years and was active player in the Mens golf league.  He loved to golf, play cards, travel and cruise. He held season tickets to many of Chicago's theaters and had a true appreciation for the arts.  He loved Chicago sports, attended the 1938 Cubs World Series and the 1985 Bears Super Bowl, but it was this past year he finally saw his beloved Cubs become World Champions.  Don was proud of the Haderlein name as his family had deep roots in Chicago politics. His grandfather was on the Chicago's City Council as the alderman of "the German Ward". His father, a politician as well, was active in Chicago Democratic politics and served as Postmaster General of Chicago.  Don was a good man, well mannered, generous and fair. He valued honesty, loyalty, respect, integrity, education and most of all family. He lived his life with purpose and with a deep faith as a member of the Catholic Church.  He led a great life and helped many throughout his lifetime.  He will be missed and remembered by all who came to know him.
