Rev. Daniel Albert Smilanic, 76, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away on February 20, 2024 after a brief illness. Father Dan was born on July 2, 1947, to Nicholas and Mary (Crowe) Smilanic at St Anne's Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from St Giles Parish School in Oak Park, ILL, in 1961 and Quigley North Preparatory Seminary High School in Chicago in 1965. Father Dan attended Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, for one year before returning to Loyola University and St. Mary of the Lake Seminary. Father Dan was ordained a Roman Catholic priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1973. After serving as an Associate Pastor at several parishes in the Chicago area, including St Gall and Mary Seat of Wisdom, Father Dan received his Doctorate in Canon Law from the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. He served as the Judicial Vicar for the Archdiocese of Chicago for many years, and later as the Judicial Vicar for the diocese of Gaylord, Michigan. During this time Father Dan was a long-time Resident priest at St Paul of the Cross in Park Ridge, ILL. Father Dan is predeceased by his parents, Nick and Mary. He is survived by his siblings John (Jack) and his spouse Barbara Smilanic, Mary Eileen and her spouse Joseph Madda, and Julie and her spouse William Ness. He is also a beloved uncle to Mary Jo, Lea, and Alex Madda, and Kathryn Ness. A Memorial Mass will be held at St Paul of the Cross on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at 10:30 am. Internment Services will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Center of Concern in Des Plaines, Ill, and Misericordia in Chicago.
