Christopher "Danny" Dignam, 95, of Harwood Heights; Born December 10, 1922 in Dublin Ireland, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2018 comforted by his friends and family. Dear son of the late Luke and Martha Dignam; brother of the late Peter, Margaret, Joseph, Esther, John, Anastasia, Elizabeth, and Francis; Beloved husband of Patricia (nee Mulhall); loving father of Charles, James, Christopher, Colleen and the late Mary. Proud grandfather of Kevin, Norah, and Erin. Danny was a beloved fixture and entertainer for the Irish-American community in and around Chicago since the 1950s. Danny came to America in 1953 after serving with the British Army during World War II. Danny served with the British Army and saw action in the North African Campaign in the Desert and Egypt. Danny also saw action during the Italian Campaign and was stationed in Italy during the surrender of Italian forces to the Allies. After World War II, Danny returned to Italy and settled in Naples for some time, where he lived and worked as a baker and later emigrated to Canada, and finally Chicago, where he settled in the St. Andrew Parish community and eventually became an American citizen. Danny was a popular and well-known singer and entertainer in and around Chicago and appeared on a regular basis at the Hibernian Hall, Keyman's Club, International Playhouse, and has been a regular fixture throughout the years at Chicago's Irish American Heritage Center. Danny will be missed by all those who were graced by his wonderful voice and presence that would fill the room. Danny continued singing Irish songs at social gatherings and church events as he aged into his 90s. Danny requested his ashes be returned to Ireland where they will scattered on the land he lovingly called home.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Cooney Funeral Home, 625 Busse Hwy, Park Ridge, Funeral Wednesday 9:15 a./m. to St. Eugene Church, 7958 W Foster Ave., Chicago. for 10:00 a.m. mass. For info 847-685-1002 or www.cooneyfuneralhome.com.
