Obituary

Charles E. Goro, 68 It is with the deep sadness that we mourn the passing of our beloved husband, father, friend and mentor. Chuck was surrounded by his loving family when he was called Home peacefully Feb. 5, 2017. Chuck defied all odds in his 17-year battle with cancer that looked insurmountable when he was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer on Jan. 4, 2000, at just 51 years old.  He is survived by his best friend, confidante, wife of 30 years and love of his life, Kathleen (Benson), five children, Taira (Brian) Doherty, Julie (Ricky) Braglia, Grace (K.C.) Kaage, Charlie and Gwen, and his two grandchildren, Liam and Caitlin Doherty. He is also survived by his mother Maureen, and siblings, Michael (Susan), John (Judy), Tim, and Debbie (Tom) Spencer, as well as his favorite Uncle John (the late Sharon) Coyne, and many nieces, nephews, friends and work associates. Chuck was born on March 3, 1948, in Chicago, to the late Frank and Maureen Goro. The oldest of five children, he grew up in true Chicago city style in a three-flat on Burling Street in Lincoln Park and was an enthusiastic sports nut starting at a young age. As a child, he would clean the Chicago Cubs bleachers at Wrigley Field after games to score tickets to the next game. A graduate of St. Clement Grammar School in Lincoln Park, and what was then Chicago DePaul University Academy, class of 1966. Chuck went on to play varsity football at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where he lettered in both football and track, winning many sports awards throughout his life including being named a Kodak All American in 1969. He graduated from SIU with a bachelor of science in education in 1970. In 1974, Chuck began his long, successful real estate career with Glascott Realty.  He then founded Tulip Realty before joining Baird and Warner, and then Koenig and Strey in Lincoln Park in the late 1980s. Chuck was Senior Vice President at Koenig and Strey for nearly 20 years before joining Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage's Lincoln Park Plaza office in 2009.  His real estate acumen and love for the business helped him successfully manage and grow the real estate careers of the Lincoln Park Plaza team, making this an award-winning, billion dollar real estate sales office year after year. He loved his Realtors, all of whom he considered family. As his illness progressed, he was incredibly proud of and humbled by the help he received from his team allowing him to continue to work. Chuck was especially grateful for the support and service from his beloved assistant LaRaine Richards, Coldwell Banker President Fran Broude and the entire Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage family.  Chuck was an avid fisherman, who angled a beautiful home on Murphy Lake in Park Ridge to spend many leisurely hours at his lifelong hobby. Raising his family in Park Ridge, he coached his children in a number of sports and was in attendance at every sporting event they participated in at Carpenter and Emerson grade schools, and then Maine South High School. He remained intensely loyal to his Lincoln Park roots and dearly loved our city, especially the Chicago Cubs, whose World Series Championship was savored in his final months. A man of great integrity and grit Chuck mentored not only his children and their friends, but also the many, many friends and Realtors whose lives he touched.  Chuck will be long remembered for his deep friendships, his sense of adventure and fun, his allegiance to all he loved and who loved him, and his guiding principle in life to "ALWAYS do the right thing." To say the least, he will be greatly missed by all who were honored to have been loved by such a wonderful man.
