Obituary

Charles Elkin (Charlie) passed into eternal life on October 24, 2022 at home with his wife at his side. He was the eldest child born to Thomas (Babe) and Elizabeth (Liz) Elkin in 1939. Charlie's sister fixed him up for a high school dance with his eventual wife Carol and the rest was a rich and well-lived life. On October 28th Charlie and Carol would celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary together. Charlie and Carol welcomed six children, Tracey (Jim) Sterner, the late Charlie, Margie (Scott) Baum, Rob (Yvette), Dan (Sharon) and Terry (Julia) into their lives.  Charlie was blessed with wonderful grandchildren who loved their "Pappa" dearly: JD, Will, Kaitlin, Tony, Samantha, Jack, Scott, Sean, John, Lucy, Tommy, Catherine, Caroline and Emma. He cherished his great grandchildren James, Owen and Bennett.

Charlie attended Gordon Tech High School where he excelled at basketball in the "lights league" and was a Catholic League All Star. Charlie later attended St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. He was a longtime supporter of Queen of Angels where he and Carol raised their children. He loved to support athletics and coached numerous kids and young adults.   Charlie was a lifelong dedicated employee of the Chicago Park District and a pillar at Hamlin and McFetridge Parks.  He had a strong work ethic and zest for life which he passed on to all his children.  Charlie was the go-to handyman, tax return guy and a source great joy and support for many throughout his life.  He loved to listen to music, golf, bowl, fish and watch grade school, high school and professional sports.  He was always a recognizable face in his bucket hat and cheerful smile at his grandchildren's games and events. Though Charlie and Carol would eventually move to the suburbs and beyond after retirement, they returned to Chicago, which they always considered their true home.

His love for life and support of his family and countless friends will be forever in our hearts. Rest in peace, dear Charlie.
