Obituary

Anthony "Tony", Mulchrone (born March 10, 1936), age 87; Beloved husband of the late Kathleen B. (nee Flaherty). Loving father of Jerry, Karen, Tony Mulchrone and Maureen (Bob) Sullivan. Cherished grandfather of Sean (Brenda) Mulchrone, Brianne and Daniel Sullivan, Connor and Ella Mulchrone. Adoring great-grandfather of Jane and Dexter Mulchrone. Fond uncle and friend to many. Dear brother of Jack (Nora) Mulchrone, England and brother-in-law Gus Flaherty, Crystal Lake, IL. Devoted son of the late David and Ellen (nee Geraghty). Dear brother to the late Patrick, Thomas, Michael, Joseph, William, David, Mary Henry and Ann McGing.

Tony was born at home on a family farm in Drunnagh, Kilmeena, Co. Mayo, Ireland where he grew up with his parents, 9 brothers and sisters, and all of the mischief a young Irish boy could produce. Tony cared for greyhounds belonging to the parish priest, he and his friends would walk, bike, or hitch a ride to go dancing and he played Irish football for his beloved Mayo. Tony was the goalie in 1955 where the Kilmeena team won the GAA junior championship.

Tony took a carpentry apprenticeship in Westport and left home to work in England, Wales, and then on to America. Playing football for the Chicago All-Stars, Tony was able to fly back to Ireland with his fiance, Kathleen Flaherty in 1961 where they attended an international banquet in Castlebar, Co.Mayo. Tony and Kathleen took the opportunity to announce their engagement at the dinner and were married on September 26 with family present in Loughrea, Co.Galway. Tony had the opportunity to employ his notable skills in remodeling homes and one of our favorites, building the flagpole holding units on the roof of Wrigley Field. He went on to become the building engineer at two Chicago lakefront high-rises where he worked until his retirement. For the rest of his days, Tony kept a pocket full of tools to repair anything and everything for anyone.

There is so much to say about Tony, he was a generous man who stopped to help those in need. He was quick with a joke or a kind word or a shot of Jameson's. He genuinely adored his children and his grandchildren but he would truly light up when his great-grandchildren would spend time with him.

We are going to miss you and the stories of catching rabbits, delivering mail from a row-boat on Clew Bay and what life was like with your family in the house in Kilmeena. We are glad you are back with Kathleen and we hope the two of you enjoy home improvement projects together in heaven.

Tony's family would like to thank Church Creek, Arlington Heights - Assisted Living caregivers, nurses and staff who cared for him with great compassion and kindness. In lieu of flowers the Mulchrone family would be grateful for donations to the Irish American Heritage Center at 4626 N Knox Ave, Chicago, IL 60630 or on the web at https://irish-american.org/donate-online/
