Ann Moore (née O'Malley), 90, of Chicago, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2023.
She was born on August 29, 1932 in Dooagh, Achill Island, Co. Mayo, Ireland, a seaside village where roaming sheep are common and peat bogs are abundant while rugged mountains form a scenic backdrop that stands over the scattered homes in the foreground.
She was the fourth of nine children born to Ellen (née Grady) and John O'Malley. As many did at the time, she left home as a teenager in search of work, first in Ireland and later in England, where she was employed for a time at a school in Liverpool.
Ann was in England when an uncle wrote inviting her to live with him in the United States. She accepted and subsequently set sail, arriving at Ellis Island in New York on August 16, 1956. She was then put on a train to Chicago, where her uncle was living and where she would live for the final 66 years of her life.
As in many immigrant stories, it was not easy at first for Ann being in a foreign land away from all that was familiar. But, she persisted. She worked long hours to support herself, but still found time for fun, including at weekly dances frequented by Chicago's Irish immigrant community.
Of all places, Ann met her beloved husband Joe at a wedding — she was a bridesmaid and he was a groomsman. They married on September 8, 1962 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chicago. Together, they raised three children: Mary, Patrick and Kevin.
She was a homemaker when her children were young, but later returned to work, including stints at Woolworth's department store and Gladstone Bakery in Jefferson Park.
But family came first for Ann. She was selfless in her devotion to her husband, children and, later, grandchildren. She was the matriarch, or to put it another way, the glue that held everyone together.
No less important to Ann was her faith. A devout Catholic, she attended Mass every day until the four-block walk from her home to the church became too physically strenuous in her later years. She ended her nights saying prayers for all those she loved and she would always end phone conversations with a "God bless" instead of a "goodbye."
Her selfless nature went beyond her family and served as an extension of her faith. There was no charity she found unworthy of her patronage. And based on the frequency in which she received donation requests in the mail, they all knew it too.
In her golden years, Ann enjoyed daily walks in her neighborhood, frequent lunch outings with friends and quality time with her beloved husband.
She also cherished time with her nine grandchildren, who she spoiled rotten, whether providing them extra scoops of ice cream over the protests of their parents or organizing fun outings to the miniature golf course across the street.
Her cooking was legendary. Family and friends always looked forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas meals that she always executed to perfection. Sleepovers at grandma's were often rounded off with an Irish breakfast that included bangers, bacon and black pudding.
Above all else, Ann was happiest when her family was together, whether that be celebrating First Communions, birthdays, graduations, weddings, holidays or for any other reason.
She was the loving mother to Mary (Jon) Wentworth and Kevin (Patti), the proud grandmother of Brian, Monica, Brittany, Thomas, Brenden, Jennifer, Sean, Kaitlyn and Collin; great-grandmother to Tegen and Selena; sister to Sr. Miriam O'Malley, Thomas (Christina) O'Malley and Christina (Kevin) Henry; and a beloved "auntie" to many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Joseph; son Patrick; siblings Patrick, Betty, Mary, John and Michael; and her parents Ellen (née Grady) and John O'Malley
